Moving List for Pets

Moving is a hectic time for your family.  It feels like there are a million things on your moving list and not enough time to do them all.  And if you have pets, it is easy for them to get lost in the shuffle between all the boxes and the transition ahead.  Pets often feel very anxious during a move, so take the time to make sure they are well cared for during the whole process by adding pet-specific items to your moving list.

Moving list for pets:

1.  Decide how you will move your pets.
Know whether your pets will be traveling by car with you, via airplane or train.  You'll want to prepare your pets and make sure you have all the appropriate and required accessories on your moving list.  Purchase pet blankets, extra toys, food and other items if traveling by car.  Obtain the required pet carrier if traveling by airplane or
train.  Make reservations well in advance for your travel, as pets cannot travel on certain types of aircraft or during certain types of weather.  Be sure you know what is required so that your pet's travel plans don't get disrupted.  Add deadlines and confirmations to your moving list.

2.  Visit your veterinarian.
Make sure your pet has all the required immunizations and that they are up to date.  Add obtaining prescriptions, immunization records and other health documents to your moving list so that you can travel with your pet and register them in your new hometown.  If you already have a vet in your new town, transfer records.  If not, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.

3.  Acclimate your pet.
If your pet will be traveling in a pet carrier, get your pet used to the carrier well in advance.  Leave the pet carrier out with the door open, so your pet can wander in and out.  Put a blanket or other familiar item that smells like home in the carrier.  The more time your pet has to get used to the carrier, the less anxious he or she will be.

4.  Spend time with your pet.
Your pet will likely be anxious, as he or she senses a change in the home and routines that have become familiar.  Make sure you do not forget about your pets as you try to accomplish your long moving list.
