Moving comes with a lot of details. And one of the best tools to keep you organized through it all is a moving checklist. A good moving checklist can be your best friend during your move and can mean the difference between chaos and a smooth move. Make sure you keep your moving checklist handy so that you refer to it often.
Moving checklist items:
1. Book moving company
Ideally, you would have a contract with a moving company secured 6 to 8 weeks prior to your moving day. It is recommended that you get estimates from at least three different moving companies before choosing the best one for you.
2. Get moving materials
It is never too early to start packing, so don't allow yourself to procrastinate by not having moving materials on hand. Add boxes, materials, permanent markers and tape to your moving checklist.
It is worth the time and effort to go through your things as you pack and set aside the items you no longer want or need. The more you move, the more it will cost you and the more time you have to spend packing and unpacking. Donate those items to an organization that could use them or sell them at a garage sale.
4. Get personal items in order
Make sure you have personal documents like passports, birth certificates, marriage license, insurance papers, vehicle titles and powers of attorney in one folder or file. Assign one person to be in charge of that file during the move. Fill out a change of address form with the post office. Contact all your credit card companies, banks, insurance providers, subscription services and other important organizations to let them know of your change of address. Transfer school records, refill prescriptions, update immunization records and obtain copies of or transfer medical records.
5. Clean and do maintenance
Come up with a cleaning plan, if you plan to handle all the cleaning yourself. If you plan to hire someone to do it for you, make sure you schedule it well in advance and add a reminder to your moving checklist to confirm a week prior. Do a walkthrough of the property and add any repair or maintenance tasks to your moving checklist. Schedule utility service dates for old and new homes.
