1. In 1885, Tucson and Phoenix, AZ were in a battle for an appropriation of $100,000 to build a mental asylum in their respective city. Tucson eventually lost the appropriation to Phoenix, instead being granted a $25,000 appropriation to build a university instead - something the local population saw as disappointing at the time. The University of Arizona was finally built and founded, opening it's doors in 1891 for students.
