1. Fort Myers was originally the location of Fort Harvey, but was renamed in 1850 as a wedding gift to one of the fort commander's officers, Abraham C. Myers who married the commander's daughter in 1853. Despite the couple moving to Germany, the name of the town stayed.

2. Fort Myers received electric lighting for the first time in 1898 thanks to Thomas Edison. At the time though, the move was rather unpopular with the local residents, as it apparently kept the cows awake throughout the night.

3. The city receives the highest number of total sunshine hours in the state of Florida - more than even Miami or Key West.
