1. Augusta was founded in 1736 by General James Edward Oglethorpe, and was named for the then Princess of Wales, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, who was the mother of King George III. Augusta was also twice made the capital of Georgia before Atlanta ultimately took that honor.

2. During Sherman's March from Atlanta to the coast during the Civil War, it is rumored that Sherman spared the city of Augusta due to a girlfriend he once had during his time when he was stationed in Augusta, and saved the town for her.

3. Augusta's most famous landmark, the Augusta National Golf Club, was established by amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts in 1932. The area the course inhabits now was previously a commercial plant nursery, something that continues to play a big part in the splendor of the course. The course hosted the first Masters Tournament in 1934, and is the only major golf tournament that is played at the same course every year. The club's exclusive and private list of members play during the winter season, as the club is closed from late May through mid-October.
