Here Are Some Fun Facts About Des Moines:

1. The dome centered at the top of the Iowa State Capital building contains roughly 100 ounces of actual gold as a part of its construction.

2. In 1834, it was suggested that the creation of a military post where the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers merged at was needed. Nine years later in 1843, Captain James Allen and his battalion from Fort Sanford began the creation of the site. The original name suggested was Fort Raccoon, but the War Department (now the Department of Defense) directed the builders to use Fort Des Moines. The city of Des Monies would then be incorporated on September 22, 1851.

3. Well before he became president in 1980, Ronald Reagan accepted the job of being the chief sports announcers for WHO Radio in Des Moines in 1933. Reagan would recreate baseball games based off the notes taken by a telegram operator that received updates via Morse code. It wasn't until 1937, when covering the Chicago Cubs spring training in California, that Reagan would get his Hollywood break by taking a screen test for Warner Bros. studios, propelling him on his eventual path to the White House years later.
