Here Are Some Facts About Wichita:

1. Wichita is known as the "Air Capital of the World," being the home of many world renowned aviation brands. Bill Lear, who invented the Lear jet, founded his company, Learjet Corporation in the 1960's in Wichita which led to many innovations in the aerospace industry.

2. Learjet Corporation isn't the only recognizable brand that hails from Wichita. White Castle (founded in 1921) and Pizza Hut (1958) both found their beginnings in Wichita. The city is also known for being the birthplace of Barry Sanders, considered one of the greatest running backs to ever play in the National Football League.

3. Wichita was granted town status on July 21, 1870 after a petition was signed by several residents. One such resident and the only woman to sign the petition was a laundry service owner named Catherine McCarty. While the name may not sound familiar, McCarty's son, Henry should - or at least by his nickname "Billy the Kid," one of the most famous outlaws of the 19th century.
