1. In French, Baton Rouge means "Red Stick." The city's name originates from 1698, when French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's expedition party discovered a red stick protruding from the ground that served as the dividing line between the Bayougoula and Houma Native American tribes' hunting grounds. The city has retained its name since its settlement in 1721.

2. In the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Baton Rouge was the only battle fought outside of the original 13 colonies. The battle, fought on September 21, 1779, lasted roughly three hours and ended with the British surrendering to a combined force of Spanish, American, Native American, and free black men. The battle played a significant role in securing American and Spanish dominance of the Gulf Coast for the remainder of the war.

3. Sitting at 450 feet and 34 stories tall, the Louisiana State Capitol building, located in the capital city of Baton Rouge, holds the distinction of being the tallest state capital building in the United States.
