2. Springfield is considered the birthplace of the famous Route 66 highway. Based off plans created in 1925 to connect Chicago and Los Angeles via highway, the numerical designation of 66 was assigned to the highway in Springfield on April 30, 1926. Parts of the old "Mother Road" (a nickname for old Route 66) can still be found on streets such as Kearney Street, Glenstone Avenue, College Street, and more.
