1. Knoxville is known as the "Marble City" thanks to the vast amounts of the resource being located near the city. 2. Knoxville was named after Henry Knox. Knox is considered on of the more pivotal historical figures in the United States. He served as the nation's first Secretary of War (which would later become the secretary of the Army) and was a trusted military advisor to then General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The founders of Knoxville honored his memory and contributions to America by naming the city after him.

3. The city played host to the 1982 World's Fair and led to the creation of one of Knoxville's most iconic buildings. The Sunsphere is 26 stories tall, and each pane of glass at the top of the structure is made of 24-karat gold. Visitors can visit the structure's Observation Deck to get an amazing 360-degree view of the city. The 1982 World's Fair also saw Knoxville host an estimated 11 million visitors from the United States and around the world. The Sunsphere and the Tennessee Amphitheatre are the last remaining buildings from the fair that were specifically created for the event.
