1. Milwaukee is home to two inventions that have influenced technology to this day. The first is the QWERTY based typewriter created by inventor/journalist Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873. The second was the first answering machine, which was created by Joseph Zimmerman, and patented his nearly 80 pound creation in 1949. The Milwaukee Public Museum currently displays four different models of Zimmerman's creation today.

2. Speaking of influencing inventions, Milwaukee is also the birthplace of the iconic American motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson. It was founded by friends William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, alongside Davidson's brothers Walter and William, and the group began creating and manufacturing motorcycles out of their West Milwaukee factory. The first functional prototype competed in a motorcycle race held at the State Fair Park on September 8, 1904.

3. A shallow lake known as Lake Emily resides under the original Northwestern Mutual headquarters building in downtown Milwaukee. The building was specially constructed for the location, taking seven years to complete.
